The bell, part of an exchange of symbols, commemorates the signing of a Friendship Agreement between Ottery St Mary and Otari in Nagano Province, Japan. Otari, also pronounced ‘Ottery’, is a mountain village in the Japanese Alps that featured in the Winter Olympic Games of 1998. Several exchange visits between members of the two communities have taken place in recent years
Ottery St Mary became a Garrison Town for the forces of Oliver Cromwell during the war and both Cromwell and Sir Thomas Fairfax stayed at The Chanters House whilst planning their campaign in the south west of the country.
