Apart from its close identification with Coleridge the town has been featured in well-known books and films by famous writer under various guises.  They include ‘Clavering St Mary in Thackery’s ‘Pendennis’ and ‘Ottery St Catchpole’ in J K Rowling’s ‘Harry Potter’ books where it became the imaginary home village of the Weasley family.

TV Films, taken from the books by Rosamunde Pilcher, have used locations in the town to create a realistic background for scenes from ‘Magie der Liebe’ and ‘Rosen im Sturm’ and her other novels.  This has attracted many visitors from Germany anxious to experience the sites and atmosphere of the novels.
