Walk the River Otter from Ottery St Mary Town to the Jurassic Coast at Budleigh Salterton. Take a picnic, discover the villages along the way and sample the local Otter Beer. Enjoy every moment watching the wildlife and marvelling at the glorious views along the Otter Valley.
It is possible that whilst walking by the River Otter you will see the magical flash of colour that is the Kingfisher and you can watch the trout rising for a fly in the sparkling water – there is never a dull moment on this lovely walk. A even rarer site are our otter and now world famous beaver families.
For much of the way the path takes the line of the old railway that for many years chugged its way from Ottery to Budleigh Salterton and also to Sidmouth on the branch line which divided at Tipton St John.
You will be welcomed in Tipton at the village shop and at The Golden Lion where refreshments and splendid food can be enjoyed whilst you take a leisurely rest beside the river.
The path then leads to Newton Poppleford and Otterton, where an ancient Mill has been restored. It now provides a superb selection of gifts, arts and crafts together with flour from the working mill and delicious bakery made on site. There is also a cosy restaurant offering home-made food.
Finally you will arrive in Budleigh Salterton on the mouth of the River Otter. Splendid views and a huge variety of bird life will delight the eye and again the historic town of Budleigh has much to offer something to please everyone.
